The District of Scarborough / Ontario mourn the loss of one of their long serving members and colleagues.
It is with great sadness that I have to inform our Branch members and friends of the passing of our colleague and friend Sturgeon Martin.
Sturgeon passed away on the evening of Tuesday April 17th 2012.
Sturgeon without a doubt will be greatly missed. He helped so many people, both as a referee and as a person. He was an asset to the District of Scarborough /Ontario.
Sturgeon arrived in Canada in 1970, shortly after he became involved in soccer in the capacity of Manager/Coach with the Maple Leaf Soccer Club. He worked in association with Henry Helou and together they enjoyed many successful and rewarding years
In 1982 Sturgeon became a qualified soccer referee, and over the years developed a good appreciation of the Laws of the game, which he administered with dignity and respect
The experience of Manager/Coach/Referee allowed him to impart his knowledge and the mechanics of the game, to many young upcoming referees and players. Many owe Sturgeon a debt of gratitude for the success they have accomplished on and off the soccer field
In addition to the above, Sturgeon was an Executive member of Scarborough Soccer Referees Association, Chief Scheduler, League scheduler and Mentor
He was recognized in the District of Scarborough for following:-
· Referee of Year-1992
· Recognition long service award 25 years - 2007
· He and others were recognized as builders of our Branch as it stands today - 2009
· He was recognized as the patriarch of the Martins three generations of referees in the year 2012
"Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead.
Just walk beside me and be my friend."
Sturgeon was a friend to all, and he would have given the shirt off his back if needed to anyone
